Receipt OCR accuracy: how to evaluate Dext, Veryfi, AutoEntry, BillSnapp

An advertised accuracy percentage needs context: which documents, which fields, how errors were counted and when the test ran. Use representative records to assess the work your team will actually review.

If you're evaluating tools for production use, run these four tests before you sign anything.

    Test 1: thermal receipts

Photograph 20 thermal receipts in dim indoor light. Measure how many extracted total, supplier, and tax fields are correct. Include unclear scans in the test rather than assuming results on clean PDFs will transfer.

    Test 2: line-item extraction

Take a long supplier invoice with 20+ line items. Count how many lines come back with correct quantity, description, and amount. Verify line-item support in the current package of each product you test.

    Test 3: local tax IDs

If you operate in Rwanda, Kenya, SA, or anywhere with a printed tax-ID convention, test whether the tool extracts those fields. For BillSnapp and each alternative, confirm required local identifiers on representative records; do not infer local tax coverage from document extraction.

Test 4: handoff to your accounting system

Accuracy in extraction is wasted if the transaction lands wrong in QuickBooks (or Xero). Push 10 receipts through and check the supplier match, expense category, and tax code on the resulting bill.

    Define acceptance criteria before testing

    • A field-level error count across your own thermal receipts and PDFs.
    • Line-item errors measured separately from header errors.
    • Required local identifiers checked against the original evidence.
    • Supplier matches checked in the destination, with exceptions visible for review.
